10 Question & Answers

I enjoy performing surgery for cancer patients (surgical oncology). Such treatment is often complex but fulfilling. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers globally, and I have found it to be a natural calling.

In today’s fast-paced world, our busy lifestyles often distract us from paying proper attention to our health. It is important to seek medical consultation not only when symptoms arise, but also for preventive screening. Prevention remains one of the most effective strategies against colorectal cancer, with options such as stool tests, colonoscopy, and imaging. Speak to a surgeon to determine which screening method is most suitable for you.

I keep myself updated by regularly reading medical journals and attending conferences, and I enjoy exchanging ideas with peers and international colleagues on the latest medical developments.

I believe in empowering patients through knowledge. I also make it a point to highlight the importance of mindfulness, with an emphasis on balancing stress with proper self-care. Regular health checks, good nutrition, and sufficient exercise are all essential to maintaining overall well-being.

One of my most rewarding experiences as a surgeon involved a patient with a rectal tumour larger than 5cm. Traditionally, treatment would have required removing the entire rectum, which would have had a severe and permanent impact on her quality of life. With advances in medical technology and the benefit of clinical experience, I was able to remove the tumour through the anus without removing the rectum. This meant the patient was cancer free, stoma free, and able to maintain a good quality of life. Just two weeks after the operation, I received a thank you note from her as she was already enjoying a holiday overseas.

A common myth is that taking probiotics is a lifelong commitment. This is not true. Depending on the patient’s circumstances, probiotics may only be needed for a short period, usually between 2 weeks and 6 months. There is no evidence that taking probiotics for life provides additional benefits. If a patient feels dependent on probiotics, I work closely with them to identify and gradually remove the triggers for their symptoms until the reliance is no longer necessary.

There are two key aspects to this. First, it is important to share information with patients at the right time. When someone is feeling very stressed or grieving, they may not be able to absorb the details fully. Second, the information should be presented clearly and in an organised way. I make it a point to explain the pros and cons of the available options and guide patients towards making a shared decision on the next step forward. My approach is always to walk with patients through their journey, offering clarity, support, and reassurance so they feel confident in the care they receive.

I enjoy reading medical journals and keep myself updated about newer technologies and advances in healthcare. The rest of the time, i do love to travel and exercise whenever i can to take my mind off work.

Advancements in transanal (natural orifice) surgery are an exciting development, offering patients the potential for a better quality of life by reducing the need for open surgery. In colorectal cancer treatment especially, advances in targeted chemotherapy now enable oncologists to shrink tumours to sizes that were previously not possible with traditional chemotherapy. This, in turn, reduces the need for major resections, with local resections becoming increasingly common.

As someone who stays current with the latest advances in healthcare, I believe in the importance of continually educating oneself about emerging technologies and treatments. Outside of my professional work, I enjoy traveling and exercising, which help me stay balanced and take my mind off the demands of my career.

When it comes to preventing colorectal cancer, there are three essential areas I always recommend focusing on:

Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle
Leading a healthy lifestyle is crucial in reducing your risk of colorectal cancer. This includes regular physical activity, maintaining a diet rich in fiber, and avoiding smoking. Smoking is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cancer, and quitting can dramatically lower your chances of developing the disease.

Practice Mindfulness
In our fast-paced world, stress is almost unavoidable. However, it’s important to recognize the impact stress can have on both your mental and physical health. I’ve personally experienced the toll of working under stressful conditions, and I understand the value of mindfulness techniques in managing stress. Regular mindfulness practices can prevent mental exhaustion and its harmful effects on our bodies over time.

Get Regular Screenings
Finally, regular colorectal cancer screenings are critical for early detection, which can save lives. Screening methods vary and may include stool tests, endoscopies, or imaging procedures. These screenings can detect potential issues before they become serious, so make sure to stay up to date with recommended screenings based on your age and risk factors.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and staying on top of screenings, you can significantly reduce your risk of colorectal cancer. Early prevention is always better than treatment, so take proactive steps to protect your health.
