Rectal Cancer Symptoms – What Are They, And When Should You Be Concerned

Rectal cancer symptoms

Rectal Cancer Symptoms – Rectal cancer often presents with symptoms such as rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits, including a frequent or urgent need to pass stool or a feeling that the bowel is not completely empty. These symptoms are commonly mistaken for less serious conditions like haemorrhoids, leading to delays in seeking medical evaluation and treatment. Recognising these symptoms and understanding when to seek medical advice could be lifesaving. This article will explain the most common symptoms of rectal cancer, when you should see a specialist, and what diagnostic tests are typically used to confirm the condition.

Common Rectal Cancer Symptoms

While rectal cancer can affect individuals differently, several symptoms are commonly associated with the disease. If you experience any of the following signs, particularly if they persist or worsen, it is important not to ignore them:

  • Blood In The Stools: One of the most recognised symptoms is the presence of blood in or on the stool, which may appear bright red or darker in colour.
  • Fatigue Or Weakness: Rectal cancer can cause a drop in red blood cells, leading to anaemia and ongoing tiredness.
  • Tenesmus:  This is a feeling that the bowel does not empty completely. You may notice changes in bowel movements, including a frequent or increased urge to pass stool. These symptoms can indicate the presence of a tumour in the rectum and should prompt medical evaluation.
  • Unexplained Weight Loss: Losing weight without trying could be linked to several types of cancer, including rectal cancer.
  • Narrow Stools: Thinner stools than usual may indicate a blockage caused by a tumour in the rectum.
  • Abdominal Discomfort: Ongoing pain, cramping, or bloating in the lower abdomen may signal a more serious underlying issue.

When To See A Specialist

Many of the symptoms listed above can also be caused by less serious conditions such as haemorrhoids or irritable bowel syndrome. However, you should consult a colorectal specialist (e.g. a colorectal surgeon) if:

  • Symptoms last longer than three weeks.
  • You notice blood in your stools.
  • You experience significant and unexplained weight loss.
  • You are over 50 and start to experience new gastrointestinal symptoms.

Early diagnosis of rectal cancer greatly improves treatment outcomes. If your doctor is concerned, they will order further investigation.

Diagnostic Tests For Rectal Cancer

If the specialist your symptoms warrant further assessment, several tests can be used to confirm or rule out rectal cancer:

  • Digital Rectal Examination (DRE): A simple examination where a doctor checks for abnormalities in the rectum using a gloved finger.
  • Colonoscopy: A thin tube with a camera is inserted into the rectum to inspect the entire colon and rectum. Biopsies can be taken during this procedure.
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: Similar to a colonoscopy but only examines the lower part of the colon.
  • CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): A non-invasive scan that creates detailed images of the colon and rectum.
  • MRI or CT Scan: Used to determine the extent of the cancer and whether it has spread to nearby tissues or organs.
