10 Question & Answers With Rethinam Ganesan

My interest in human anatomy, combined with a strong desire to help people improve their health and quality of life, inspired me to pursue a career in physiotherapy. I have always been drawn to a profession that allows me to work closely with individuals, support their recovery, and guide them toward better physical function and wellbeing.

Physiotherapy should not only be considered for the management of medical conditions or injuries, but also as a proactive approach to preventing health issues. Many musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic conditions can be better managed or even prevented through early assessment, targeted exercise, and lifestyle guidance.

I regularly review the latest journal articles, clinical guidelines, and research publications to stay updated on evidence-based practices. Continuous professional learning is essential in healthcare, and staying current allows me to ensure that my patients receive the most effective and scientifically supported interventions.

My philosophy is not simply to tell patients what to do, but to guide them, empower them, and journey alongside them in their recovery. I believe that when patients understand their condition and actively participate in their rehabilitation, the outcomes are often more meaningful and sustainable.

In many ways, every patient who walks through the clinic doors and commits to improving their health represents a success story. The willingness to take that first step toward change is already significant. My approach is always to place myself in the patient’s shoes by understanding their struggles, limitations, and barriers to recovery. Effective physiotherapy is not only about prescribing the right exercises, but also about addressing the real-life challenges that patients face in implementing them.

A common misconception is that physiotherapy is simply about massages or quick fixes, similar to taking medication. In reality, physiotherapy is a structured and evidence-based process that focuses on restoring function, improving movement, and building long-term resilience. I spend time educating patients about their condition and explaining how active rehabilitation plays a key role in their recovery.

I make it a priority to clearly explain the available therapy options, the expected outcomes, and the realistic timelines involved. This allows patients to make informed decisions about their care and feel confident about the treatment plan we develop together.

I prioritise regular exercise, typically four to five times a week, as it helps me maintain both physical and mental wellbeing. I also make a conscious effort to keep clear boundaries between work and personal time so that I can spend meaningful time with my family and remain energised for my patients.

One of the most exciting developments is the integration of artificial intelligence and data analytics, which can help clinicians analyse patient data more effectively and personalise rehabilitation programmes. Another important emerging area is the growing role of physiotherapy in longevity and preventive medicine. Physiotherapy has always been well positioned to support individuals in maintaining health and function long before disease develops.

Preventing chronic illness often comes down to maintaining healthy daily habits. Regular and appropriate exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, avoiding harmful habits such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, caring for mental wellbeing, and maintaining strong social connections all play an important role in supporting long-term health.
