GASTROClear Blood Test For Gastric Cancer – Are You Suitable For It?

GASTROClear gastric cancer test - who should go for it

GASTROClear, by local biotech firm Mirxes, is an accurate molecular blood test used for early detection of gastric cancer. Gastric cancer in its early stages may show no symptoms, yet, it is one of the most common cancers in Singapore. It is thus important to screen regularly for it to enable early detection and treatment. For a quick primer on what GASTROClear is, and how it works to detect gastric cancer, you can refer to our quick introduction to the test.

Who Should Take The GASTROCLear Test?

According to Mirxes, the test may be taken by people of either sex, aged 40 years or older. They should be of “average risk” of getting gastric cancer, but has one or more gastric cancer risk factors:

Risk Factors For Gastric Cancer

  • A history of gastric cancer in the family.
  • A personal history of Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) infection.
  • Suffering from chronic gastritis.
  • Take large amounts of fried food, smoked foods, salted fish, processed meat, and pickled foods.
  • Take foods containing nitrites and nitrates substances commonly found in cured meats.
  • Low intake of fruits and vegetables.
  • Smoking.

For People Who Are Wary Of Invasive Gastric Cancer Tests

GASTROClear, being a blood test that yields high accuracy in detecting gastric cancer, may be seen as a blessing for people who do not wish to undergo more invasive tests.  This is because its high accuracy, both in terms of false-positives and false-negatives, may allow the patient to avoid having to go for a gastroscopy (which is still the gold standard for gastric cancer detection). However, it is important to note that GASTROClear is not intended as a replacement for gastroscopy.

If the result from the test shows that the patient is at low risk of gastric cancer, a gastroscopy may be avoided. However, your doctor may still order a gastroscopy if the result indicate an elevated risk of having the cancer.

As with any screening test, it is important to consult your doctor to get a proper understanding of the results and for an appropriate follow-up plan of action.
